BRAZIL: Lula nominates justice minister to supreme court

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced on 27 November that he would nominate his minister for justice and public security, Flávio Dino, to fill the seat on the supreme court (STF), which was vacated following the retirement of STF justice Rosa Weber in early October. Before entering politics, Dino spent 12 years as a federal judge. If his nomination is accepted, Dino’s experience in congress, as a state governor and a cabinet minister, would make him a force to be reckoned with on the highly politicised STF, which has come under increased pressure from the right-wing opposition.
