Illegal spying scandal hits Brazil’s intelligence agency
Brazil’s federal police (PF) launched an investigation on 20 October into members of the national intelligence agency (Abin), who allegedly carried out illegal spying activities during the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023). Police suspect that Abin’s surveillance capabilities might have been abused by pro-Bolsonaro factions for political ends, as the alleged targets of the illegal monitoring include journalists, lawyers, judges, and public officials considered to be critics of Bolsonaro.
