ECUADOR: Seeking to quell mining concerns
Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso issued Executive Decree 151 on 5 August, outlining the government’s “Action Plan for the Mining Sector”. The decree is the most significant show of support for the industry by an Ecuadorean government since the Rafael Correa administration (2007-2017) and puts forward a roadmap to resolve some of the key political challenges faced by the sector. Nonetheless, the plan will face local and political resistance, especially from the indigenous movement, complicating the advancement of a sector which the Lasso administration sees as beneficial for economic growth and state revenues.
