New government installed amid political tension

Paraguay’s new Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) government led by President Mario Abdo Benítez was installed on 15 August. Despite leading a brand-new administration, Abdo Benítez assumes office in a tense and fragmented political environment. This is the result of the lingering divisions within the ANR-PC, as well as those between the ANR-PC and the main opposition Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico (PLRA). Such a politically charged scenario is threatening to undermine governability for the new government.
