Chile questions US Jerusalem decision
Chile: On 6 December, Chile’s foreign ministry issued a statement voicing deep concern about the decision by the US government led by President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. In line with United Nations resolutions, Chile considers that the city of Jerusalem has special city status, which should be negotiated between Israel and the Palestine state, which also claims Jerusalem as its capital. The decision by the Trump administration has been criticised by many nations on the grounds that it could prove to be detrimental to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process via the adoption of a unilateral decision on a matter that has not been settled on during the long-running peace process. Chile may be one of the US’s closest allies in Latin America, but the South American country also has the largest Palestine community outside of the Middle East and this group has become politically influential in Chile. Pointedly, the foreign ministry’s statement issued an “urgent call” for all parties involved in the Isreali-Palestinian peace process not to make any decisions which may incite hatred or violence and could diminish the chances of reviving the internationally sponsored peace process.
