VENEZUELA: Government-media war escalates

Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez has signed into law a reform approved by the national assembly preventing bankers from owning media outlets. Ecuador recently approved an identical piece of legislation in an attempt to put an end to “media mafias". The passage of the law coincides with international coverage of press “censorship" in Venezuela after a judicial ruling restricting the print media's coverage of the issue of insecurity in the month leading up to legislative elections on 26 September [WR-10-33].
