TRINIDAD & TOBAGO: Heading for the polls under a cloud
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s People’s Partnership (PP) alliance, comprising the United National Congress (UNC), the Congress of the People (COP), the Tobago Organization of the People (TOP), and the National Joint Action Committee, faces re-election this year. It came to power in 2010 by winning 29 of the 41 seats in the House of Representatives following a disastrous decision by the People’s National Movement (PNM) prime minister, Patrick Manning, to go to the polls early just after the economy had suffered the sharp reverse of 2009.
