HONDURAS: Arias assumes mediatory role

Costa Rica's President Oscar Arias will mediate talks between the deposed president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, and the interim president Roberto Micheletti in San José on 9 July. Arias was sounded out by the US as the mediation efforts of the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, were getting nowhere. Insulza emerged discredited when Zelaya's grandstanding attempt to return to Tegucigalpa by plane was thwarted on 5 July at the culmination of the OAS ultimatum for him to be restored to power. Two protesters were killed as the military sought to disperse a pro-Zelaya “greeting party", numbering several thousand.
