Mexico: On 24 April Mexico City hosted the second meeting of North American defence ministers. The meeting was attended by the US Secretary of Defence, Chuck Hagel, and Canada’s defence minister, Robert Nicholson, who were hosted by Mexico’s defence minister, General Salvador Cienfuegos, and Mexico’s navy minister, Admiral Vidal Francisco Soberón. The ministers discussed issues of joint interest including cyber defence, border security, humanitarian assistance and disaster response. The ministers recognised the efforts of the three North American countries to face joint security challenges. However, Cienfuegos highlighted the need to continue working on other issues like natural disasters, anti-drug trafficking efforts, cyber security and trilateral defence institutions. Hagel said that Mexico had re-expressed an interest in acquiring a range of US capabilities, potentially including 18 US Black Hawk helicopters. Nicholson said that Canada was committed to helping Mexico deal with issues of transnational crime including drug trafficking, stating that, “there’s no isolation anymore in the world when it comes to this activity, crime knows no boundaries” .
