BRAZIL: Supreme court clashes with federal police

“The fear of an authoritarian police state, versus the apology of widespread corruption has put the executive and the judiciary on a collision course," said the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo over the latest squabble between the supreme court and the federal police - which led the court's president Gilmar Mendes and the justice minister Tarso Genro to argue publicly last week. But while the two men disputed the claims that the federal police have leaked information to intimidate judges, the police made new arrests in connection to a case involving banker Daniel Dantas, which has the potential to become one of the worst ever corruption cases in Brazil.
