Lugo orders more changes in the military
Development: On 4 January it emerged that on 31 December,
following an order issued by the executive, the Paraguayan armed forces
commander, Felipe Melgarejo, ordered the reassignment of 35 members of the
army's special troops (TEE).
Significance: Since taking
office in 2008, President Fernando Lugo has ordered changes at different levels
in the country's armed forces, including four changes in the military high
command. This reflects the uneasy relationship between the left-wing Lugo and
the powerful military. The effective disbandment of the TEE would do little to
improve this relationship and might also dent the president's public image.
