Peru takes lead against EU directive
Peru is leading the campaign to forge a regional consensus against a new directive approved by the European parliament on illegal immigrants. Under the directive, which follows measures by the US to tighten immigration laws, illegal immigrants can be detained for up to 18 months and blacklisted for re-entrance to the European Union (EU) for up to five years. If the directive is approved at a European Council meeting in July, member states will have two years in which to bring it into effect.
