EL SALVADOR-HONDURAS: Holding out hope for immigration reform
The US has agreed to extend for 18 months the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations enjoyed by more than 300,000 immigrants from El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. The biggest beneficiary by far is El Salvador, which has 230,000 expatriates living in the US under TPS. There are also 78,000 Hondurans and 4,000 Nicaraguans. El Salvador's President Tony Saca did almost all of the lobbying for the extension which is a reward for his country's unconditional support of US foreign policy. He now has until March 2009 to get what he really wants: comprehensive immigration reform. Bipartisan approval for this in the US Congress, however, will be hard to achieve.
